The MPI Automotive MBM488PHD is a 3in centre hotdog for the Holden Colorado/Rodeo and D-Max range (RA/RC/RG). A hotdog is a compact, straight-through resonator — so this is the free-flowing centre silencing option rather than a chambered muffler.

What is a hotdog and what does it do?

A hotdog is a small straight-through resonator: the pipe runs uninterrupted through a perforated core wrapped in packing, so gas passes with minimal restriction while the packing absorbs some of the harshness. It is the lighter-touch centre device, used to knock the rasp off a turbo-diesel without the volume drop or the flow restriction of a full chambered muffler. The MBM488PHD is the 3in version, sized to keep these diesel utes flowing through the middle of the system.

Hotdog vs a full muffler — who is it for?

If you want the centre section opened up but still want to tame some of the drone, a straight-through hotdog is the middle ground. It flows more freely than a chambered muffler because the gas path is not folded back on itself. That makes it a popular choice on diesel utes that run a freer-flowing system but still need some resonance control in the centre.

Will it suit my Colorado, Rodeo or D-Max?

This hotdog is listed to fit the Holden Colorado and Rodeo and the D-Max in the RA, RC and RG codes, covering the 3.0L and 2.8L turbo-diesels. Those codes span several years and builds, so confirm your exact model and the rest of your system with the workshop before ordering.

What does fitting involve at our Illawarra workshop?

Oak Flats Muffler Men fits this 3in hotdog in-house. We check where it sits in your run, the joins either side and the clearance along the chassis, then weld or clamp it in so it integrates with the existing pipework. Send your chassis code and we will confirm fitment and book the bay.
