The MPI Automotive SSMKHN0113 pairs a hotdog resonator with a rear muffler on a 2.5in dual layout for the 5L VT Commodore sedan. That two-stage silencing is its defining trait — a header-back system tuned to take the rasp off without going fully quiet.
What does the hotdog-and-muffler pairing do?
Rather than one muffler or two of the same, the SSMKHN0113 runs a hotdog resonator up front and a rear muffler behind it across its 2.5in dual pipework. The hotdog knocks down the harsher mid-range rasp a worked V8 makes, while the rear muffler handles the bulk of the silencing. The result on the 5L VT is a cleaner tone than a single-muffler build without the drone of a fully boxed-in twin-muffler setup.
What's covered in the package?
It's a header-back system for the 5L VT sedan: tuned-length extractors at the cylinder heads, dual 2.5in pipework, the hotdog resonator and the rear muffler. The factory cast manifolds and the original exhaust both come out and the SSMKHN0113 goes in as one matched set, with primaries sized to the 2.5in legs so the whole run flows together.
What's an extractor and why change the manifolds?
Extractors are tuned-length headers that replace the restrictive cast manifolds the VT's 5L left the factory with. Each cylinder gets its own primary tube before the merge, cutting back-pressure and helping the engine scavenge spent gas. Honestly stated, they sit in the engine-bay heat zone, take real labour to fit, and change the note — here softened and tidied by the hotdog-plus-muffler combination rather than left raw.
