A single 3in system rather than a dual sets the MPI Automotive SSMKHN0228 apart in the VU-VY-VZ V8 ute range. The two banks merge into one 3in pipe that runs back through a rear muffler and out a tailpipe — a simpler, single-exit layout under the tray.
Why a single 3in instead of a dual?
Where the dual builds carry a pipe on each bank the length of the car, the SSMKHN0228 collects both banks into one 3in run. A single large-bore pipe is a cleaner, lighter layout with one exit, and it's a genuine alternative to the twin-pipe approach rather than a cut-down version of it — the right choice when a single tailpipe is what you're after under a Commodore tray.
What's in the package?
It's a complete extractor-back system, not headers alone. Tube-and-merge extractors replace the cast factory manifolds at the heads — the main breathing restriction on these V8s — then the system collects into a single 3in pipe, runs through a rear muffler and exits via a tailpipe. The upgrade runs from the engine all the way to the tail.
What's the note like?
With both banks feeding one 3in pipe and a single rear muffler doing the silencing, the SSMKHN0228 gives a fuller note than stock while the muffler keeps it controlled. The muffler-and-tailpipe rear damps the exhaust rather than running it open, so it's a step up in voice without being the loudest option in the ute family.
