Safari V-Spec snorkel for the N80 Hilux, reviewed by the blokes who drill the holes

The Safari V-Spec is the snorkel everything else gets compared to: Australian-made polyethylene, a water-separating air ram and a lifetime warranty. What it does, what it does not, and the part number trap on the N80.

Safari V-Spec snorkel for the N80 Hilux, reviewed by the blokes who drill the holes brand logo

No accessory makes an owner more nervous than the one that starts with a hole saw through the guard of their Hilux. So before any drilling happens, the product going on had better be worth the holes. After years of fitting them, the Safari V-Spec is still the snorkel we measure everything else against.

What you are looking at

The SS124HF is made in Australia from Safari's own industrial spec UV stabilised polyethylene, a one-piece body that shrugs off sun, scrub and car wash brushes alike. Up top, the air ram is not just a scoop: it is designed as a water separator, spinning rain and spray out of the incoming air stream before it heads down to the standard airbox. Mounting hardware is stainless steel, the connection hoses are moulded EPDM rubber, the assembly seals watertight, and Safari backs the snorkel with a lifetime warranty. That warranty is not marketing fluff either, these things genuinely outlast the vehicles they are bolted to.

How it behaves on the road

What you get is intake air drawn from roof height instead of from inside the guard, which means cooler, cleaner air on dusty convoy work and breathing room in water you would never trust the factory intake with. What you do not get is power, and we will say that plainly because plenty of sellers will not: a snorkel is insurance, not a performance part. The genuine con is that fitting is permanent. The template puts a big opening and a ring of fixing holes through the guard, plus mounts at the A-pillar, and there is no undo button. It is also worth saying that a snorkel alone does not make a wading truck: diff and gearbox breathers, electrics and common sense still decide how deep you go.

Fitment and price reality

Here is the trap we catch weekly: SS124HF suits the narrow-body N80 Hilux from October 2015, the WorkMate-style front. The wide-guard 2.8 variants take a different Safari part number, and the two are not interchangeable. The snorkel is $583, and fitting is a careful morning on our hoist, template taped, holes deburred and sealed properly so the guard never rusts from the inside.

The workshop call

If your Hilux sees dust, water or long touring miles, the V-Spec is the version of this product done right, and the lifetime warranty settles the brand argument. Send us your build date and body style before you order so we confirm the correct part number, then book it in and we will quote the snorkel fitted, sealed and finished the way a hole in your guard deserves.
