The MPI Automotive MBM293MF is a centre muffler for the 3.0L diesel Toyota Hilux (LN147/167/172). It is the middle silencer in the system — the body that takes out the diesel drone through the centre of the ute before the gas reaches the rear.
What does a centre muffler do on a diesel Hilux?
On a 3.0L diesel Hilux the centre muffler handles the low-frequency drone that diesels are prone to at cruise. The MBM293MF sits in the middle of the system and quietens the resonance there, before it builds up toward the back of the ute. Replacing this section alone is the practical fix when the original centre can has rusted or started blowing but the rest of the run is still serviceable.
Why renew the centre section?
Work-ute exhausts cop heat, water and corrosion, and the centre muffler is often the first part to fail. Swapping just this body lets you put the silencing back in order without the cost of a full system. The supplier lists the body at a 2in bore. It is a like-for-like replacement, so the front pipes and rear muffler stay as they are.
