The MPI Automotive MBM361MF is a 2.5in centre muffler for the six-cylinder Ford Falcon ute (BA/BF/FG). It works through the middle of the system, where it takes the edge off the cruise-speed boom before the gas reaches the rear.
What does the centre muffler do on the Falcon ute?
The centre muffler sits in the middle of the run and handles the bulk of the mid-frequency resonance you hear at cruise. On the BA-to-FG six-cylinder ute the MBM361MF renews that section, so it is the body to swap when the original centre can has rotted or started blowing but the rear and front are still serviceable. The supplier lists the bore at 2.5in.
Centre vs rear — what changes?
This is the centre position, not the rear. A centre muffler does more to settle the booming resonance through the cabin than it does to alter the final tailpipe note, which is the rear can's job. Renewing the centre is the move when the middle of your system is the part that has failed, and it leaves the front pipes and rear silencing in place.
