The MPI Automotive SSMBM242WOM is a 3in dual centre Y-pipe for the 4.5L V8 Toyota LandCruiser VDJ79 — supplied without a muffler. It replaces the centre section with a straight Y-pipe, so it deletes the centre silencing rather than renewing it.
What does a without-muffler Y-pipe change?
This section runs the two banks of the V8 into a dual 3in centre as a Y-pipe with no muffler in it. Because it removes the centre silencing the system would otherwise carry, the result is a louder, harder note than a centre muffler leaves — that is the whole point of the without-muffler version. It is the choice for owners who want the centre opened right up on the VDJ79 V8.
What it does and does not do
A straight Y-pipe in the centre flows more freely than any silenced section because there is nothing for the gas to fold through. It does no quietening on its own, so any noise control has to come from whatever mufflers remain elsewhere in the system. The supplier lists the bore at 3in. Going without centre silencing makes the truck noticeably louder, so it suits a build that accepts that trade for flow.
