The MPI Automotive SSMKTY0216 is the stainless, no-muffler, no-cat 3in turbo-back for the Toyota Fortuner GUN156R 2.8L 1GD (2015–2025). It's the most stripped-back build in the Fortuner range — cat deleted and muffler deleted in stainless — which is also why it carries the hardest road-legality caveat.
Is it road legal in NSW?
No. Because the SSMKTY0216 removes the catalytic converter on a turbo-back system, it is not ADR 79/04 compliant for road registration in NSW and is for off-road use only. Deleting the cat takes out the emissions hardware the Fortuner left the factory with, so this spec is intended for off-road or competition vehicles, not a registered daily driver.
What does no muffler and no cat give you?
Turbo-back replaces the exhaust from the turbo outlet rearward. With both the cat and the muffler deleted and the system run in 3in, there's nothing in the path to restrict or quieten it — so this is the freest-flowing, most open version for the 2.8L 1GD. It's the build for an off-road Fortuner where flow and a hard note are the priority over refinement.
Why the stainless build?
Stainless construction resists rust and heat bluing, so it stands up to dust, water and salt better than coated mild steel — the reason to take the stainless version of this turbo-back on a 4x4 that works off the bitumen. It's the corrosion-resistant build of the most open Fortuner spec.
