Sized at 4in, the MPI Automotive SSMKTY0389 is a turbo-back side-exit system for the Toyota LandCruiser VDJ79 V8 4.5L Single Cab (2016 on). The big 4in bore is the headline — it suits the V8 turbo-diesel's output, and this build deletes the cat and runs no muffler.
Why a 4in bore on the 79 Series V8?
Bore is an application choice. At 4in, the SSMKTY0389 is sized generously for the VDJ79's 4.5L V8 turbo-diesel, prioritising flow on a larger engine over keeping gas speed up. It's a turbo-back, so it replaces the system from the turbo rearward, exiting out the side — the full engine-back upgrade rather than a rear-section change.
Is it road legal in NSW?
This configuration deletes the catalytic converter, so it removes emissions hardware the LandCruiser left the factory with. It is not ADR 79/04 compliant for road registration in NSW and is supplied for off-road and competition use only — no softening that. We'll be clear about it before you order.
What does running without a muffler add?
With no muffler in the system, the 4in side-exit pipe flows straight through, giving the V8 an open, hard note. Combined with the cat delete, this is among the freest-flowing builds in the VDJ79 range, aimed squarely at off-road duty where the priority is minimal restriction rather than a polished tone.
