The MPI Automotive FX-421 is a set of extractors listed to fit the Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4-litre 4G64 engine, from 1989 onwards. It replaces the factory cast exhaust manifold at the cylinder head with a tubular extractor design.
What's an extractor and what does it do?
An extractor, or header, swaps the cast manifold bolted to the cylinder head for a set of tubes, giving each port its own runner before they merge. The aim is to cut the back-pressure the engine works against as it pushes spent gas out. It's the first item in the exhaust line, sitting right at the engine, with the rest of the system running behind it. On the four-cylinder 4G64 that's a single tubular set. It's a breathing change at the head only; it doesn't alter the engine's capacity or its fuelling.
