STR614 is the driver-side rear muffler for the Holden Commodore VE and VF. Supplied by Redback, it's the side-specific rear silencer — the half of a dual rear setup that sits on the driver's side, sold as a single muffler rather than a pair.
Why is this a side-specific muffler?
On a dual-exit VE-VF Commodore each rear muffler is handed to its side of the car, with the inlet, outlet and mounting set to suit that half of the system. The STR614 is the driver-side unit. Buying the correct side matters because the routing and hanger points differ left to right — fit the wrong side and the pipework and tailpipe won't line up. If you're replacing both sides you'd pair it with the passenger-side equivalent.
What does the rear muffler do here?
This is the rear silencer — the box at the back of the run that does the final quietening before the tailpipe. A chambered rear muffler absorbs and reflects sound to keep the note in check at the exit. As a single side it's a targeted replacement for a worn, rusted or damaged driver-side muffler rather than a full system change. The rest of the exhaust stays as it is.
